Back in February of 2020, Intel Contributed Secure Device Onboard (SDO) to LF Edge. Shortly after, Intel offered its SDO technology to the FIDO IoT working group and it was accepted as the foundation for a new IoT specification known as FIDO device Onboarding (FDO). The FDO specification is a new, open IoT standard which enables devices to simply and securely onboard to cloud and on-premise management platforms. The intent of the SDO project was to be a leading implementation of the new FDO specification. To better reflect this intent LF Edge SDO project has now been renamed to FDO and provides an open source implementation for the FIDO Device Onboard Proposed Standard version 1.1.
Moreover, the original SDO implementation has been deprecated in favor of the current FIDO compliant implementation. Also this year the latest implementation FDO was integrated into the LF Edge Open Horizon project making it easy to use FDO-enabled edge devices with Horizon by simply importing their associated ownership vouchers and then powering on the devices. In addition, Dell Native Edge leverages FDO for its automated onboarding process and ASRock has integrated FDO into products like its iEP-5000G Iot Industrial gateway. The FDO project plans to continue to support current and future versions of the FDO specification as well as add support for integration with various OS deployment methods.
